Differences between payment cards

There are many different types of payment card. Some can only be used in certain shops or petrol companies, for instance, and some can only be used in Denmark. International payment cards are available that can be used in most parts of the world as well as to pay for purchases made over the internet. MasterCard, Maestro, Visa, Visa Electron and American Express are some of the most popular payment cards in the world.

You should note that surcharges, interest charges for overdrawing an ac-count and fees for payment cards may vary greatly. Always read the rules applying to your payment card.

Payment cards are normally divided into debit cards and credit cards:

  • Debit cards like Dankort, Visa Electron and Maestro mean the money is deducted immediately from your account.
  • Credit cards have a longer settlement period, so the amounts are deducted at the same time, at the end of the month, for example. The same goes for cards like MasterCard, American Express and petrol cards.
