Depositing securities

Your Danish securities are typically issued and deposited electronically in the Danish central securities depository VP SECURITIES (VP). In Denmark, individual investors have a personal custody account in the depository managed by an authorised institution - usually the account holder's banker. This means your securities are kept safely in a custody account registered under your civil registration number (CPR).

When you buy and sell securities, VP also handles the settlement transactions, transferring the traded securities between your custody account and the counter-party's, while cash funds are transferred in the opposite direction. At VP funds and securities are always settled at the same time, avoiding the risk of one party to a transaction fulfilling his part of the deal without receiving remuneration.

VP used to be an independent institution, but is now a limited company owned by its users, ie, Danmarks Nationalbank, mortgage banks, institu-tional investors and banks.
