Fewer bank robberies in 2014

7 January 2015

For the fourth straight year, the banks experienced a decline in the number of physical robberies in 2014. This is a result of increased security in the branch offices and changes in customer behaviour.

In 2010, 135 robberies were committed in the Danish banks, savings banks and co-operative local banks, whereas 21 were committed last year.

“We are very pleased about the development. However, we have not reached our goal before we have reached the point where no physical robberies are committed in the branch offices”, says Rasmus Engbæk Larsen, Security Manager at the Danish Bankers Association.

“Above all, the positive development means that threats and assaults against bank employees have dropped. It is very important, as it can have serious consequences for those involved. Studies show that 12 percent of the robbery-exposed employees develop acute stress symptoms or post-traumatic stress. It can have a major impact on the affected and his/her close relations to family and friends,” Rasmus Engbæk Larsen further explains.

According to the Danish Bankers Association’s Security Manager, the reasons for the continued decline in the robbery statistics are related to two primary conditions: partly the customers’ declining demand for cash, which has resulted in more cashless branch offices. And partly that the security level in the remaining cash branch offices has increased.

“The behaviour and needs of customers have changed, and the banks must of course be where the customers are. More and more customers use online banking instead of the physical branch office. This restricts the access to cash and thus increases security,” Rasmus Engbæk Larsen explains and continues:

“Of course, it is our ambition to continue the positive development in 2015. Therefore, it is important that all financial institutions maintain the high level of security and continuously focus on increasing the security. The risk of bank robberies will not disappear until the day, where we no longer have physical cash in our society.”
