The world’s most prestigious conference on payments comes to Copenhagen

17 March 2015

It is very good news for Copenhagen as a tourism and event city and for the financial sector that the world’s most important conference within the payment industry, Money20/20 in Las Vegas, has chosen to place a European equivalent in the Danish capital.

Bella Center Copenhagen will set the stage, when Money20/20 Europe will be held for the first time in April 2016. The conference will run for three days, and will be a recurring event that is expected to attract at least 3,000 participants in the first year. The conference will cover any topic related to the payment industry and the participants include both established players such as banks, credit card companies, entrepreneurs, researchers etc.

“I am really pleased that the Money20/20 Europe conference will be held in Copenhagen from 2016. When several thousand participants from the financial sector visit Copenhagen, it will help strengthen our financial IT cluster and create jobs for the Copenhagen citizens within tourism, the event industry and in the financial companies,” says the Lord Mayor of Copenhagen, Frank Jensen.

The news about Money20/20 Europe also generates excitement in the Danish financial services sector.

“We must utilise the momentum and the international network that the conference will bring us. In a global world, where many countries do not have as advanced payment systems as in Denmark, Money20/20 Europe can e.g. help to create new jobs and increase exports of Danish solutions,” says the Banking Executive at the Danish Bankers Association, Tonny Thierry Andersen.

The Money20/20 conference in Las Vegas annually attracts 7,000+ participants (including a large group of decision-makers) from 3,000 companies and 75 countries over three days.

In connection with the recent conference in October 2014, Money20/20 announced the plans to expand with a European conference in 2016. Since then, Wonderful Copenhagen, Bella Center Copenhagen and the network organisation Copenhagen Fintech Innovation and Research (CFIR) have worked to position Copenhagen as host city and Bella Center Copenhagen as venue. Lars Bernhard Jørgensen, Managing Director at Wonderful Copenhagen says:

“Through a strong collaboration between great forces, we have managed to create a valuable platform that is built on many of the capital’s strengths, and which ultimately has been a decisive factor in the decision of choosing Copenhagen. Money20/20 Europe is a prestigious conference, which strengthens Copenhagen’s position as an attractive and relevant destination for knowledge and business events.”

CEO at BC Hospitality Group (owner of Bella Center Copenhagen), Allan Agerholm adds:

“Once again, the fantastic collaboration between Wonderful Copenhagen, the City of Copenhagen and private actors has secured a world-leading conference for Copenhagen – and this time, even for two consecutive years and with the opportunity that the conference will become an annual event in the city.”
